Fugu is a strip of fabric that is handwoven on a loom. It is predominantly found in northern Ghana. Weaving is done with threads which are mostly cotton
Fugu is believed to have originated from contact with traders from Burkina Faso who exchanged their woven fabrics for foodstuff, guinea fowl and millet with people from northern Ghana.
Fugu weaving on a loom
Historically it was reserved for chiefs, traditional priests and prominent people in northern Ghana. However it started to gain prominence on the international stage during the struggle for independence by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana first president) who showcased smock (made of fugu) on high profile political for events. Today, fugu is used for making clothing, accessories and has been featured by designers both locally and internationally.
